After researching Lawrence Weiners work for a while i decided to start brainstorming ideas (a table in context) at the time i was exploring all aspects of what a table is (a surface, a platform, a word), how they are used, the natural tables of the world ( table top mountain) and what the person behind the table represents (the power or lack of) e.g. the boss behind the table or a priest at the alter using this i came up with my first set of ideas to take the table out of context, like have a board meeting table in a church or an alter table in Mc Donald's they give off a crap political feeling but they aren't really good ideas like i found out when we discussed the proposal.
The second idea was to make a table and record my thoughts as i was doing it. I made a table out of paper in the classroom by following some instructions found on the Internet , didn't look to bad bit thin though. I also made a card board table back at the flat which was alright but i messed the legs up because i didn't account for the thickness of the card bard so i made them triangles. the writing was something i was experimenting with also because i thought the table needed something else. I was doing this to to try to explore Weiners way of working because when he starts something the goes and experiments with different materials sees how they work with each other in different way and then in another way and then he would translate what he has created into language .
Doing this didn't give me many answers and cost me £40 because i ended up buying a flat packed table and recorded myself building it, not one of my best ideas but it still helped me to realize that i needed to keep away from the literal so i decided to use a logic table to show the creative process.
When i started this idea i had quite a clear image of what it should look like in my head pretty much what it looks like now but less refined. I wanted to keep the design simple because i believe simplicity can say alot.
This is the simple logic table that i had so clearly in my head you can see the Lawrence Weiner style in it, the simplicity and typeface see to that not the same font he uses (Franklyn Gothic Condensed) this one is called Big Noodle, found it on DaFont.com it is similar but not the same. I did other designs for it as well they are bigger and less logical but this one doesn't work without the others there to support it.
It didn't take me long to come up the text i just sat down and thought about what i do when i start a project and what i do all the way through in its simplest form. I came to the words THINK, DESIGN and DO the words just seemed right and to the point. Can't say why i chose the colours just liked them it isn't a traffic lights reference but it could be STOP-THINK GET READY-DESIGN GO-DO. Didn't actually think of that until now. Hmmmmmmm.
When the presentation/crit came along i had made a different version of the logic table to make it i used masking tape and spray paint. I thought the piece looked good but i wanted to have it in several slightly different styles but by doing this i didn't make the table obvious enough so i went away and kept to my original design but made some more illogical logic table to support the one i have.
